About Jesús Rafael Soto
Jesús Rafael Soto is a Venezuelan optical and kinetic artist and pioneered the viewer walking through and interacting with the art pieces. His work asks the viewer to observe “matter-energy” and being inside or with the work.
Born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, Soto (1923–2005) moved to Paris in 1950 and became one of the defining figures of kinetic and optical art. His signature works suspend painted rods and elements in front of vibrating linear grounds, so the piece appears to shimmer and dissolve as the viewer moves, an effect he pushed to room scale with his walk-through “Penetrables.” His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
