About Duane Michals

Duane Michals is an American photographer known to be a photographic innovator of the last century. Known for his narrative photo-sequences, often incorporating multiple exposures and text to examine emotions and philosophy.

Michals (born 1932) upended photographic convention in the 1960s with staged, multi-frame sequences and handwritten texts added directly onto the print. He has used those tools for six decades to picture what a single documentary image cannot: dreams, desire, mortality and the spirit. His work is represented in major museum collections worldwide.
