About Weegee

Weegee is an American photographer and photojournalist. Known for his edgy, black and white documentation of the streets of New York, both the turmoil and life within New York. From murders to performers to day to day life. His work captures the essence of New York in the 1900s.

Working under the name Weegee, Arthur Fellig (1899–1968) prowled Manhattan's night streets in the 1930s and 40s with a Speed Graphic camera and a police radio, reaching crime scenes, fires and spectacles ahead of the authorities. His 1945 book “Naked City” fixed his reputation, and his flash-lit pictures of the city's extremes remain foundational works of American press photography.
