Suzzy Lake

Suzzy Lake is an American-Canadian photographer, performance artist and video producer. Her works engage with the ideas of identity, gender, beauty and ageing. Through her exploration, she became one of the first female artists to explore the politics of gender and body within Canada.

A pioneering figure of photo-based and performance art in Canada, Lake turned the camera on her own body decades before self-representation became a central artistic strategy, using masking, costume and seriality to question how identity and gender are performed. Her work has been the subject of major Canadian retrospectives.
