About Richard Lindner
Richard Lindner was a German-American painter known for his surrealist and cubist artworks made with a theme of the erotic and enigmatic. Using bold outlines and a gradient of colours, his paintings often explore themes of powerful figures, gender and machine.
Nuremberg-born Lindner (1901–1978) fled Germany in 1933 and, after a career as an illustrator in Paris and New York, turned fully to painting in the 1950s. His armoured women, gangsters and circus figures, rendered in hard edges and saturated colour, anticipated Pop art while remaining entirely his own, and his work is held in major museum collections.
