About Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark was an American photographer known for her photojournalism often capturing the unseen and under represented. Her work demonstrates an enormous amount of humanity within her black and white photos.

Mark (1940–2015) built one of the great bodies of American documentary photography, returning for years to the people at society's margins: the runaway teenagers of “Streetwise,” the women of Oregon State Hospital's Ward 81, circus performers in India. Her portraits pair unflinching honesty with deep empathy, and her work appeared in Life, The New Yorker and Rolling Stone across four decades.
