About Lisette Model

Lisette Model was an Austrian born American photographer known to be one of the most influential street photographers in the 1940s. She redefined documentary photography and is known for her frank humanism in her works portraying city life.

Vienna-born Model (1901–1983) made her name with the fearless, close-cut street portraits of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and New York's Lower East Side. As an influential teacher at the New School in New York, she shaped a generation of photographers, most famously Diane Arbus, and her prints are held in major museum collections.
