John Baldessari

John Baldessari was an American conceptual artist blending a wide variety of mediums into his work. He pioneered the craft mixing photography, painting and texts to examine the nature of artistic media and culture.

Baldessari (1931–2020) burned his own early paintings in 1970 and rebuilt art from language and found images: overpainted film stills, coloured dots over faces, deadpan text canvases. Through his work and his decades of teaching at CalArts and UCLA he became one of the most influential conceptual artists of his generation.
