About Horst P. Horst

Horst P. Horst was a German-American pioneer of fashion photography known for his work in Vogue and other magazines. Leading the way with avant-garde, surrealism and ancient Greek’s ideal of beauty in his coloured and black and white fashion photography.

Horst (1906–1999) defined studio fashion photography at Vogue from the early 1930s onward, lighting his sitters with a classical precision drawn from Greek sculpture and surrealist wit. His 1939 “Mainbocher Corset” remains one of the most reproduced fashion photographs ever made.
