About Antoni Tàpies

Antoni Tàpies was a Spanish artist known for his mixed-media abstract paintings and sculptures. A mostly self taught artist influenced by the Dada movement, surrealism and Eastern philosophy his works fuses material, symbolism and spiritual transformation.

Tàpies (1923–2012) was a central figure of European postwar abstraction. A co-founder of the Catalan avant-garde group Dau al Set in the late 1940s, he became internationally known for his “matter paintings,” working marble dust, sand and found materials into densely textured surfaces marked with crosses, letters and graffiti-like signs. He was also a prolific printmaker, and his lithographs and etchings carry the same raw materiality as his paintings. The Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona is dedicated to his work.
